Merger and acquisition levels in the newsletter and directory business during the first quarter this year was at about the same pace as the first quarter in 2002, according to statistics released by Whitestone Communications, Inc. of New York. The four deals in this year's first quarter had a total value of $11 million, compared with two deals worth $9 million a year ago. Those numbers compare with some 10 deals per quarter in 2001 and 10-20 per quarter in 2000.
